Font management

If you’re a designer who works with typography, we’re willing to bet that you’ve had to deal with your fair share of tight deadlines and narrow parameters. As common as these kinds of projects may be, they’re also incredibly stressful, leaving little room for creative flair or exploration.

That’s why some of the most exhilarating design projects are those with more open-ended criteria and plenty of turnaround time. They leave you with the freedom to explore a wide variety of resources for inspiration and achieve your creative potential through each step of the process. You can even do this throughout your daily life, collecting ideas as you come across them and giving your unconscious plenty of time to “chew on” on the project (after all, some of the best ideas arrive as random “aha!” moments while doing other things, like taking a walk or cooking dinner).

But as thrilling as this open-endedness is, an abundance of creative freedom can also be intimidating. Boundaries and deadlines give projects much-needed structure, which designers must establish for themselves when a client or other collaborator doesn’t impose them.

So where do you even begin a process as amorphous and intuitive as creative exploration? Every designer has their own approach, often honed over many years of practice, but we can certainly advise on how Monotype Fonts can serve as a well of rich and boundless typographic inspiration. Read on for an overview of how to use our powerful search and discovery features to find the inspo that’ll take your projects to the next level.

Designers’ top sources of inspiration in Monotype Fonts.

The Monotype Fonts Library contains over 150,000 fonts from an array of world-renowned foundries. Without the right tools to navigate it, it’s nearly impossible to explore a font collection that enormous. (It’d be like trying to survey thousands of acres of forest by simply showing up and beginning to wander around.) That’s why it’s crucial to take advantage of Monotype Fonts’ advanced tools to help you explore all 150K+ fonts.

Find similar fonts.

One of the best ways to discover new fonts is through the fonts you already know and love. The “similar fonts” tool is one of the most direct ways to use existing fonts as a springboard for more inspiration.

With time to spare, you can go down a rabbit hole of discovery by clicking “similar font” when you’re drawn to particular features of a typeface. To learn more about how to use this feature, check out our brief video tutorial walking you through the process.

Identify fonts you happen to come across with WhatTheFont.

Spotted fonts “in the wild” (e.g., in an ad, a piece of art, or almost any other image) and looking to identify them? WhatTheFont is a revolutionary tool that designers of the past could only have dreamed about. All you need is an image that contains the font you’re interested in—after cropping the image to focus on the text, upload it to WhatTheFont for instant font ID suggestions.

Getting started is as simple as navigating to the Monotype Fonts dashboard and clicking the camera icon in the search bar. For more detailed instructions, here’s our step-by-step guide to using WhatTheFont.

Leverage the power of AI for font pairing.

Font pairing is a complex process that involves weighing an array of factors, from indefinable characteristics like “vibes” to concrete visual properties and typographic features like x-height, width, and stroke contrast. Pinpointing pairings that create the effect you’re looking for is both an art and a science. That’s why this task is perfectly suited to an AI trained on the expertise of type design pros.

Monotype Fonts’ newest feature for typographic exploration is our AI-driven Font Pairing engine. It’s built with our type designers’ deep knowledge of what makes a harmonious font pairing and has been trained on the thousands of fonts in the Monotype Fonts Library. To start discovering inspiring font pairs, click the pair icon   next to the font you’d like to generate pairs for and specify whether it will be used for headline or body text.

Learn more about how to use the Font Pairing tool, including how to apply filters to your font pair search and how to sync font pairs, by reading our Help Center article on the subject. And for more advice on mastering font pairing, watch a recording of our recent webinar on the subject led by two typographic experts.

Explore Monotype Tags.

Another AI-powered tool trained on the enormous Monotype Fonts Library and guided by our in-house expert type designers, Monotype Tags simplify font exploration by allowing you to search fonts by mood and feel, among other kinds of descriptors. From “serene” and “whimsical” to “sophisticated” and “luxury,” there are now a total of 60 tags to help you locate fonts with your preferred vibe—and we are always adding more. To use the Monotype Tags filter, you can either select your preferred tag from the filters bar or enter the name of the tag (or a synonym) in the search box.

Try our other useful tools and features.

There are a few more Monotype Fonts features that also facilitate exploration:

  • Lists/favorites: If you come across inspiring fonts, collecting them on a list makes it easy to return to them later.
  • Advanced typographic filters: Filter your search by font style, visual properties, typographic features, and even the foundries and designers you love most.
  • In-product resources: Knowledge from our in-house type experts could be the source of your next “aha!” moment. For instance, our annual Type Trends reports and New Releases carousel make it easy to stay up to date on the latest and greatest in the world of typography.
